World Party | Private Revolution
This won’t be the first time I tell you to listen to World Party. I count myself blessed that I grew up on a musical diet of World Party and bands that had something to do with World Party.
It was in the walls of our suburban Bayswater home which now ceases to exist that my two-or-three-year-old self was exposed to the lyrical prowess of Karl Wallinger.
At that age, when your Dad is the kind of person who thrashes particular songs repeatedly, you’re going to take in a lot of the lyricism on a subconscious level.
Although Private Revolution is not the #1 most thrashed by my Dad of all World Party songs, it certainly speaks to the Paradigm O attitude the most obviously.
If you want a revolution, baby,
There is nothing like your own.
You don’t have to do all those burning books –
Revolutionize at home.
Someone’s been hiding the pieces.
Someone been burning down the trees.
So we need your revolution, baby.
There’s a planet to set free.
We are the revolution, baby,
Come to take you home.
If you say you want a revolution, baby,
There is nothing like your own.
Yep, I was a baby in the era of Private Revolution and I’m sure there are plenty of other Private Revolution babies out there who were born into the kind of world that necessitates this music to be written.
This was an era when all of the problems were obvious and the solution, suggested by Wallinger, starts at home.
In case you didn’t realise, that is exactly the kind of revolutionary action this here – Paradigm O – is. I’m typing this with my back against the wall and a cushion under my laptop. Revolutionize at home.
And if you aren’t completely won over by the impressive stop-motion of the eccentric household furniture making its way out of the house, or the impressive lyricism or the charisma and style of the band then you will be at 2:15 when Sinead O’Connor kisses the world, and you realise that kinda means that you, being a resident of Earth, have been metaphorically kissed by Sinead.
This timeless music is nothing short of iconic. Here at Paradigm O, it is as much about reviving music as it is about discovering new music. Most importantly, it is all about what the writers intention is and just as I write every word knowing the responsibility I have to future generations, so too does Wallinger.
This is on display in each and every World Party song which is why you will be reading plenty about World Party from me if you choose to find yourself hanging out here.
If you want to deep dive into World Party after reading this, why not start here.
